The Hoka Mach 4 surprises with its more sleek performance and comfort than bulkier Hoka options. The shoe feels more minimalistic and firm while remaining comfortable and nicely locked down.
Traction is good across a range of road-like surfaces with reasonable durability.
Runners report early signs of wear, but then also report the wear does not continue at the same rate and the shoe runs well for a few hundred miles with little performance loss.
A neutral, stable shoe with a firmer forefoot. The dovetail heel shape appears to help the ride a bit.
Good breathability on the uppers with a soft mesh material.
The Hoka Mach 4 has great color options and a lower looking profile than some of the gigantic Hokas. These shoes look great on the run and around town.
A surprisingly snappy ride and flex considering how comfortable this shoe is — and also very lightweight for the form. There is a stiffness which some other Hokas don’t have, but it’s not a bad experience and some runners may prefer it for the energy return.
The Mach 4 sole has a curve to it which is meant to help propel a runner forward. Runners do report the outsole itself showing signs of wear early on, but not affecting performance.
Hoka uses PROFLY foam which was developed for the Carbon X racing shoe. It’s soft and bouncy without being overly so and is nicely grounded.
Redesigned uppers are more friendly to runners with wide feet than previous Hoka shoes. The heel tab is great for babying the achilles and the fit is locked down in general thanks to the tongue gussets.
Laces on the Mach 4 seem to be designed for larger shoe sizes and run long on smaller sizes, but the laces are also thin and tend to untie so runners cinch them down which can create pressure on the foot. Don’t be surprise if you decide to swap out the laces.
The Hoka One One Mach 4 is a great option for the average runner’s “do everything” shoe. It is surprisingly lightweight, look great and isn’t as chunky and tall as some Hoka shoes.
