  • One of the best shoes for walkers since the heel area is setup nicely for a heel strike

  • A bit heavy
  • Some runners say this is only a trainer and they wouldn’t use it for a long distance race, other runners swear by the HOVR Sonic 4 and have even run ultra-distances in them. Worth trying on at the store to judge for yourself.

Under Armour HOVR Sonic 4 Features

Comfort and Fit

A comfortable and solid shoe. Fits true to size, feels generally stable (the upper could use a little more structure) and offers good energy return.

Traction

Excellent traction across multiple surface types such as road and gravel.

Durability

The Under Armour HOVR Sonic 4 is consistently reported as durable with no unusual wear patterns or premature breakdowns.

Support

The HOVR Sonic 4 is a tale of two support types. The cushioned and responsive sole is offset by a less structured upper which some runners find to be too flexible allowing for heel movement.

Breathability

Great breathability, runners report feet staying comfortable and dry compared to other shoes.

Style

Under Armour makes cool looking gear and the HOVR Sonic 4 is no exception. These shoes are stylish and fun to wear around even for casual use.

Flexibility and Responsiveness

Most runners find these shoes sufficiently flexible and responsive without being exceptionally inclined in a particular direction.

Under Armour HOVR Sonic 4 Construction

Outsole

As with many road shoes, the HOVR Sonic 4 has good traction and durability across paved and unpaved surfaces of modest technicality.

Midsole

The midsole is the main attraction with a special foam called Olefin which is supposed to provide great energy return and remain consistent across temperatures. Cushioning feels standard with good spring.

Upper

Runners have mixed feelings about the knit HOVR Sonic 4 uppers as they are quite flexible, yielding almost no hotspots but also leaving the heel feeling a bit loose.  Mileage seems to vary by runner as some rave about the uppers while others wished it was more structured.

Lacing System

The lacing seems to work for most but one runner did mention she had trouble using the last eyelet and had to cinch the shoe hard to get it snug.

Conclusion

Many runners and walkers love the Under Armour HOVR Sonic 4, wearing it for exercise but also casual use because the shoe is comfy and looks great.  The Sonic 4 tilts towards those with a heel striking landing gait, but don’t let that stop you from testing them out to judge for yourself. Definitely a great option for training.
